When, during drill with the guard parade, some soldier committed an error, it was marked with chalk on his back, and after the exercise in arms had ceased, those at fault stepped or were called forward before the front and were beaten by two persons appointed for the purpose, with such even rhythm and distinguished skill that within one minute the offender had received, as goods duly delivered, his respectable 100 to 150 strokes.
