These words penetrated deeply into my heart. I thought: yet another link in my long chain of misfortune. I took my leave, but felt glad to possess courage and strength to bear the chain's weight.

I resolved to seek French service, and to accept the rank of a non-commissioned officer for want of something better, since I could always see and learn something new and have my maintenance during the two years that the King had ordered me to remain beyond the borders of the realm.
