It was agreed with the landlady that, after lights had been lit in the evening, the maid should come to change my bedclothes, which were carried to and from the attic; they were carried in smaller portions in order to accustom the sentries to this innocent business, during which the sentry in the hall usually opened for the maid the door to the entrance hall, where the stairs also led to the attic.
