the Colonel declared himself most highly satisfied with our joint effort, thanked us, and departed for the town, accompanied both by the officers with whom he had come and by the Major whom we had to obey as our commander, so that the old officer, as lieutenant, became the senior man on the spot, or commander in the Major’s absence, for the others were all cornets.

A young, fiery cornet reproached the lieutenant for having erred several times in command, whereby his division was led astray and the entire movement consequently failed; the latter defended himself stubbornly, could in no way be convinced, and my opinion was requested, which was: that in my view everyone had erred, though more or less.
