It was a genuine pleasure to see again my universally revered Commanding Officer, who even now was pleased to embrace me with undiminished favour and, as in the previous year, to give me the use of a saddled horse, without which I could not have attended the muster.

That year, despite its being late in the autumn, we had favourable weather, so that the men could be diligently occupied and attain such proficiency that one dared assemble the companies into a battalion in order to satisfy the curiosity both of the Commanding Officer and of the other officers, to see for the first time such a progression of the reserve troops in weapons drill.
