In accordance with the notice received, I presented myself to the King’s private secretary, who informed me that the Secretary of State for Military Affairs had received a Royal command, at the first vacancy through death and at whatever infantry regiment, to put me forward for an ensign’s pay; in addition, I was given 150 riksdaler from the King’s private purse and, on behalf of His Royal Majesty, a promise of an equal sum annually until I obtained pay.
Enligt erhållen tillsägelse infann jag mig hos Konungens handsekreter, hvilken underrättade mig att Stats-Sekreteraren för Krigs-Ärenderne fått Kongl. befallning, att vid första vacance genom dödsfall och vid hvilket infanteri-regemente som helst, anmäla mig till fendriks lön; derjemte lemnades mig från Konungens enskildta kassa 150 R:dr samt å Kongl. Maj:ts vägnar löfte om en lika summa årligen, intill dess jag erhöll lön.

O nej! Den osynliga handen, som i mina barnår ryckte mig utur dödens armar, hade utsett mig att på den stora verldstheatern spela många svåra och hvarandra högst olika roler.

With my 150 riksdaler in my pocket and my King’s exalted promise of protection for my future, I was nevertheless not content with myself when at Mariefred I seated myself in a sleigh and departed for Stockholm, where I arrived that same evening.
Med mina 150 R:dr på fickan och med min Konungs höga löfte om beskydd för min framtid, var jag dock icke nöjd med mig sjelf, då jag i Mariefred satte mig i en släda och afreste till Stockholm, dit jag samma afton ankom.
