We had reached the latitude of the Nyköping archipelago when one day a terrible rush of ice fastened all our sails; the wind was storming from the east, we could not manoeuvre the ship and thus could not avoid falling down toward the land and the rocks, which lie far out at sea.
Wi hade uppnått höjden af Nyköpings skärgård, då en dag ett förfärligt isglopp fastgjorde alla våra segel; vinden var stormande ostlig, vi kunde ej manövrera skeppet och således ej undgå att sacka ned emot landet och klipporna, som äro belägna långt ut till sjöss.

With great exertion the anchor cables could be freed; axes were at the masts in order to cut them down at the last moment of distress.

In this desperate situation we endured a long stormy night, which unexpectedly gave way to a calm morning, mild weather, and, dearest of all, a fine southwest wind.

We had already come in among the rocks, but the driving ice gradually broke up so that the sails could be managed, and early in the afternoon of the same day a pilot from Landsort met us and took us into Ärhamra harbour, where for several weeks we awaited the clearing of the archipelago.
