The last-mentioned lack was made good by donkey's milk, which was not expensive but had an excellent effect in the rice porridge, which was afterward eaten with red wine and sugar in such ample portions that one could with complete justice say that we had enjoyed ourselves both in body and soul.
Den sistnämnde bristen ersattes genom borickemjölk, som ej var dyr, men gjorde en ypperlig effekt i risgröten, hvilken sedermera åts med rödt vin och socker i så fullkomliga portioner, att man kunde med allt fog säga det vi njutit både till kropp och själ.

Ordinary wine cost not much more than good ale in Sweden, which especially pleased the seamen; but nothing could so delight my eyes and tempt my palate as the great abundance of grapes, oranges, figs, chestnuts, etc., that was to be had here.
Ordinärt vin betaltes ej mycket högre, än godt dricka i Sverige, hvilket synnerligen behagade sjömännen; men intet förmådde så fägna mina ögon och reta min gom som det stora öfverflödet af vindrufvor, apelsiner, fikon, kastanier m. m., som här vankades.
