my step-grandmother, then in widowhood, one of the most highly estimable old ladies of former times.

Here I stayed several weeks, in order to regain strength and obtain clothes.

At first people were astonished at me, because I never felt full, but this fear soon disappeared.

After all the purposes of my visit with grandmother had been attained, I was taken a few more Swedish miles to a paternal aunt, who was also a widow; she seemed to vie with my grandmother in tenderly and kindly embracing her nephew, happily released from his fetters.

For a longer time I stayed with this good aunt, and through her efforts I was taken in charge by two civil officials who had a fixed journey to Stockholm before them, by which route I too was to travel in order to reach my uncle and guardian.

I can still call to mind how kindly I was received in this city by my maternal grandmother and several maternal aunts, together with many other persons related on my mother's side; but after a short stay with them, I was entrusted to my uncle's brother-in-law, who took me to his mother, at whose house my uncle, together with several of her children, were assembled.
