whose good natural gifts and tractability during his growing years can never be denied him; you know how he, pious and simple, was left to himself too early, how he was led astray from a sure road to future happiness; you know that he succumbed upon this road, that after his fall he took up seafaring and pursued it for nearly twelve years, with distinguished praise as a seaman, but also with testimony that he was a very poor manager of his affairs.

He certainly enjoys a secure livelihood so long as he is blessed with able limbs and a sound body, but these gifts of Providence are often of a precarious nature; and even if that fortunately does not happen, he nevertheless faces an old age that makes him unfit to continue his occupation, and in either case he has probably not saved the least thing for his support in old age, but has only a claim upon compassion.
Han njuter visserligen en säker lifsbärgning, så länge han hugnas med färdiga lemmar och en sund kropp, men dessa Försynens gåfvor äro ofta af en vansklig natur, och om så lyckligtvis icke händer, emotser han dock en ålderdom, hvilken gör honom oskicklig att fortsätta sitt yrke, och i hvilket fall som helst har han troligen icke samlat det minsta såsom lifsuppehälle på ålderdomen, utan äger endast anspråk på medlidande.
