He wished at fourteen years of age to enter the brilliant career, which step, although taken in a moment of need, was nevertheless highly hazardous, since a natural sluggishness of comprehension denied him the ability to gather the higher theoretical knowledge belonging to the profession.
Önskade att vid fjorton års ålder få bestiga den lysande banan, hvilket steg, om än i nödens stund taget, likväl var högst vågsamt, emedan en naturlig slapphet i begreppet nekade honom att samla de till yrket hörande ädlare theoretiska kunskaperna.

He became a Sergeant in the 2nd Guards, and despite all his inferiority in understanding he soon displayed a surprising proficiency in the exercise of his duties, and this was not overlooked by his superiors.
