After completing his sixteenth year, he became a supernumerary Chamber Clerk at a civil office in Stockholm, where, by incredible exertion and industry, assisting with regular duties within the office, he earned a fee with which, through the most frugal manner of life, he could clothe and feed himself without the least support from his parents.

Through diligence and exactness in the service he became so favourably known to his superiors that, when a vacancy occurred within the office, he was preferred over several older colleagues, and at twenty years of age received promotion to the regular establishment, with which promotion he finds himself so content that he is little tempted ever to strive for a better one.
Genom flit och noggrannhet i tjensten blef han hos sina förmän så fördelaktigt känd, att han, vid tillfälle af ledighet inom verket, blef föredragen flere äldre kamrater, och vid tjuge års ålder erhöll en befordran på ordinär stat, med hvilken befordran han finner sig så belåten, att han föga frestas att någonsin eftersträfva en bättre.
