hares and partridges, the latter of which, although especially protected, nevertheless sometimes got to accompany them in the game bag.

It was a particular pleasure to attend a hare hunt on the plains when snowless winters occurred, for one could see how the white hare made its circles through the green juniper bushes, and one could shoot as many of them as one desired.

At a certain time in autumn, so-called alvargrimmor or brockfågel gathered in abundance, a delicious game bird larger than the small birds taken for the table, of which sometimes ten could fall to a shot.

But if this constituted an advantage, it was nevertheless slight in comparison with the fishing in a lake that belonged to the estate; here no fish-well was needed, one needed only suitable weather, and then the pot was put on the fire, but sometimes had not had time to come to the boil before the fish was in the kitchen.
