Several times the crofter was close to being caught in the snare, but the advocate was always at hand to loosen him; yet with all his cunning he could not prevent the rogue from being taken to the Crown jail and fitted with an iron shackle.

The investigation disclosed that my enemy, or the accused man's advocate, despite all his legal exertions, still could not free the crofter from strong suspicions of having carried out the arson, nor himself from complicity in it; and although suspicions, however strong, are not evidence upon which the accused may be convicted, they nevertheless remain valid witnesses before the tribunal of opinion and of the thinker.
Af undersökningen upplystes, att min fiende eller den anklagades advokat med alla sina juridiska ansträngningar ändock ej kunde befria torparen från starka misstankar att hafva verkställt mordbranden, ej heller sig sjelf från delaktighet deruti; och om misstankar, fastän starka, dock icke äro bevis, på hvilka den anklagade kan fällas, förblifva de dock gällande vittnen inför opinionens och tänkarens domstol.
