Quite apart from the unpleasantness of conducting lawsuits, when one lacks a natural inclination for it, I had a particular aversion to the draining of money and the useless waste of time; I had therefore resolved not to prosecute this encroachment upon the right of ownership; but after I had ascertained with certainty that the perpetrator of the violence not only boasted of his deed, but rather declared it lawful in every respect, I could not refrain from having him summoned before the interpreters of the law.
Utan afseende på det oangenäma vid rättegångars utförande, när man saknar naturlig böjelse dertill, hade jag isynnerhet afsky för penningesugandet samt det onyttiga dagdrifveriet; jag hade alltså föresatt mig att icke åtala detta ingrepp i äganderätten; men sedan jag med säkerhet hade utrönt, att våldsverkaren ej allena skröt med sin gerning, utan fastmer förklarade densamma till alla delar laglig, så kunde jag icke afhålla mig från att låta kalla honom inför lagens tolkare.

The defendant had adroitly tracked down and brought along the foal's owner, in the hope of being able through him to give the lawsuit a different appearance; but this man was an honest man, who declared quite openly that the foal did indeed belong to him and that he had certainly heard the notice concerning its collection, but that he did not consider the animal worth as much as the feed expended upon it, for which reason he made no further claim to ownership either.
Svaranden hade behändigt uppsnappat samt medfört fölungens egare, i hopp att kunna genom honom gifva rättegången ett annat utseende; men denne var en ärlig man, som helt öppet förklarade, att fölungen väl tillhörde honom samt att han visserligen hade hört kungörelse angående afhemtningen, men att han ej ansåg kreaturet vara så mycket värdt, som den påkostade födan, hvarföre han ej heller gjorde något vidare anspråk på äganderätten.
