The King said that in the following year they would infallibly become free cadets; but as they, though not old, were nevertheless unusually grown in height, I ventured humbly to point out that in a coming year, being still more developed in body but perhaps not in knowledge, they would become a laughing-stock in the first class, for which reason I petitioned that the King might graciously be pleased to accept them as pages, but to this His Majesty replied that there was no vacancy.
