An old maid, her master’s faithful servant, kept house there and must necessarily have discovered me, unless she deliberately closed her eyes, which I am all the more inclined to believe because she began more and more to feel a kind of compassion for my innocent suffering and not infrequently shared with me a piece of the not abundant portion of bread she had received; but although this channel leading to the preservation of life was carefully dredged and sounded by me, I was nevertheless eventually to run aground.
En gammal jungfru, sin husbondes trogna tjenarinna, hushållade der och skulle nödvändigt hafva upptäckt mig, så framt hon ej hade med flit blundat, hvilket jag är desto benägnare att tro, emedan hon mer och mer började hysa ett slags medömkan för mitt oskyldiga lidande och delade icke sällan åt mig en bit af sitt undfångna, ej öfverflödiga brödstycke; men oaktadt denna till lifsbergning ledande kanal var af mig sorgfälligt uppmuddrad och pejlad, skulle jag dock omsider stranda.

One evening, when the maid had carried food in to her master, who usually dined solo in his chamber, I steered a sure course toward the kitchen and at once saw in the hearth a pot in which porridge had been cooked and which was now filled with water to loosen the crusts.
En afton då jungfrun inburit mat till sin herre, som vanligen spisade solo i sin kammare, styrde jag en säker kurs åt köket och såg genast i spiseln en gryta, hvari gröt blifvit kokad, och som nu var fylld med vatten för att lossa skofvorna.
