In one of the realm’s fortresses, where my father, who was a Major in the Fortification Corps, held the office of Commandant, I was born on 12 February 1758.
Uti en af rikets fästningar deri min fader, som var Major vid Fortifikationen, beklädde Kommendants-sysslan, föddes jag den 12 Februari år 1758.

My mother was the fifth daughter in a distinguished and wealthy merchant household in Stockholm, married my father in 1755, and had in this marriage two sons and two daughters, of which children my brother was the eldest, I next, and thereafter my sisters.
Min mor var femte dottren i ett lysande och förmöget köpmanshus i Stockholm, gifte sig med min far år 1755 samt hade i detta äktenskap tvänne söner och tvänne döttrar, af hvilka barn min bror var äldst, jag dernäst och derefter mina systrar.

It was not my lot ever to see my father, because he was in part ordered on duty at a considerable distance and in part, as head of the family, attended meetings of the Riksdag, during which latter business he also died in Stockholm in 1761, before I had yet completed my third year.
Det blef icke min lott att någonsin få se min far, emedan han dels var på längre afstånd kommenderad i tjensten och dels såsom familjens hufvudman vistades vid Riksmöten, under hvilken sednare förrättning han jemväl afled i Stockholm 1761, innan jag ännu fyllt mitt tredje år.

One of my sisters died the following year, and the surviving family now consisted of my mother with two sons and one daughter.
En af mina systrar dog följande året, och den efterlefvande familjen bestod nu af min mor med tvänne söner och en dotter.
